91 Pts Ian Dagata - Vinous Media

"Bright yellow-green. Aromas and flavors of lemon drop, minerals and sexy sweet spices are complicated by quince and buttercup. Dense and ripe, with penetrating acidity framing the wine's middle palate and extending the bright green apple, almond and white flower flavors on the back. Shows plenty of verve but is a little less opulent than the Balciana wines of old. This is very much like a superior version of Tralivio (which is saying a lot, given that wine's quality level), yet I miss the opulence and late-harvest personality of wines such as the 2006 or 2007 Balciana. But I'll grant that this version matches better with most foods and should be very popular." Reviewed March, 2013

Description:

About the Producer
"'A very rare estate in Italy that devotes itself completely to just one grape, Verdicchio. Patrizio and Daniela, and their children Tommaso and Caterina have raised Verdicchio wine making to an art form, and nobody produces as many successful wines from the grape as they do. The Verdicchio Balciana is especially grand, undoubtedly one of Italy’s twenty best white wines: made from a late harvested grapes grown in a beautiful amphitheater, this single vineyard wine is only made in the best years (for example, none was made in 2002 or 2005) [...] Wine lovers should also try the Tralivio Verdicchio, which has improved by leaps and bounds over the last five years and is now one of the best Verdicchio wines made anywhere.' - New Releases from the Marche: Something for Everyone (Jul 2015) by Ian D'Agata, VinousMedia.com

"Located in the heart of the Marche on the west side of the Esino river, Sartarelli encompasses 66 hectares of vines located 300-350 feet above sea level. With an average vine age of 33 years and soils that are characterized by calcareous and marl stone, owners Donatella Sartarelli and her husband Patrizio Chiacchiarini are producing wines that are very terrior driven and classic to the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC.

"As with many of the producers Massanois partners with, Donatella and Patrizio firmly believe that the wine is made in the vineyard. To this end they are practicing substainable farming, only using pesticides when absolutely necessary and allowing grasses to grow in order to replenish nutrients into the soil. During harvest, which usually occurs between mid-September and mid-October, they make multiple passes through the vineyards, taking only the fruit that is at its optimum ripeness.

"All of the grapes are soft pressed, with fermentation for the Classico and Tralivio being done in stainless steel and the Balciana and Passeto in cement. No oak is used at all, allowing for the purity of the fruit to come through. The end result are artisanal wines that are clean, soft, and layered with complexity." - Distributor's Notes
