"Elegant and focused with ripe pears, vanilla blossom, smoke, brioche and fresh mineral character. The texture is lovely with a wonderful fine mousse leading to the vibrant, clean finish. Composed of 90% Pinot Noir, 10% Chardonnay. The Chardonnay was aged for 5 months in a brand new Oak Barrel to add woody aromas. Aged 4 years on lees (Dosage:8, grapes from year 2009). (Best 2013-2021)" - May, 2013 (JD) |
Description:
Gerard Witvoet and Pierre-Olivier Joffard started Vantz Clippert less than 10 years ago. Gerard was always passionate about wines, but had never worked in the industry before. Pierre-Olivier is a trained oenologist and is the finest wine expert in this partnership. Both he and Pierre-Olivier came into the Champagne industry by passion, not with the idea of making an occupation out of it. They soon realized that working with wine could never disappoint them, so they decided to jump in and create a new Champagne, which they knew would be an incredibly huge challenge.
They believed in their project because they knew they had access to the best quality fruit. This access was gained through the solid relationships they cultivated for many years. Quality is the main focus here: they pay careful attention to grape selection and crafting their wines using the most traditional methods, as well as letting the Champagne age long enough to develop the perfect aromas. They make sure never to compromise the wines. For example, they were unable to find Pinot Meunier that was up to their standards, so the decision was made to not use this variety in their wines. Because they are very particular about their grape quality, the production is limited, with 60-70,000 bottles a year.
Gerard and Pierre-Olivier did not want to put their own names on the label like so many others do. They chose to use the name "Vantz Clippert," which is the name of the 18th Century boats in France that came once every few months to bring culinary spice discoveries from other lands. They wanted their Champagne to be a sort of metaphor of these boats: traveling around and bringing joy, excitement and quality to each person that opens it.
Review by Champagnifique
Remarkably light golden color with fine mousse and long lasting effervescence. The nose starts with florality: lavender, roses, jasmine blossom and acacia followed by coconut, white chocolate, candied fruits, confit dâoignons with pink pepper, citrus and pronounced ripe juicy pineapple. Secondary aromas of hay and myrrh. After some time in the glass, the wine is expressive with a striking oyster flavor. The aroma is very complex, you can dive deep into. On the palate we get retro-olfactory pineapple, ripe citrus, slightly notion of the wood and delicious minerality of limestone and oyster juice. The finale is remarkably long with torrefacted flavors of toast, nutmeg and light coffee. Delicious!
