"The l'Hortus 2008 Coteaux du Languedoc Pic Saint-Loup Grande Cuvee constitutes virtually the identical blend - 60% Syrah; 30% Mourvedre; 5% Grenache - as its 2009 counterpart, but the effect is dramatically different. A tart fresh berry edge and mouthwatering salinity guarantee an invigorating experience, and there is a striking sense of cut and clarity to the fruit, transparent to stone, iodine, pungent herbs, and savory, marrow-rich meaty elements, all the way through to a sustained finish. Hints of toasted wood, smoky black tea, and leather serve merely for seasoning while not detracting from a purity and freshness of fruit that is absent from the corresponding 2009. And for all of the energy and refreshingly tart impingements of fruit and mineral on display here, there is already a patina of fine tannins. This should be worth following for at least half a dozen years. (Tasted alongside, incidentally, the umami-rich, more carnal and herbal yet equally mineral and fruity 2007 Grand Cuvee retained plenty of energy, albeit performing at the lower - 92 point - bound of my issue 183 pre-bottling forecast.) Vineyards: Mourvedre (situated under the Hortus cliff) has a south-west exposure; Syrah (situated under the Pic Saint Lopu cliff) has a northern
exposure; and Grenache an intermediate exposure. Farming Practice: Sustainable with organic practices (moving towards organic certification),
aging: 12-14 months in French oak, 2/3 new and 1/3 one year old barrels
ABOUT THE PRODUCER: Domaine L'Hortus
A young agronomist studying at the University of Montpellier back in the 70's discovered an abandoned piece of land nestled between two
facing limestone cliffs. The grape vines had grown wild and the huge olive trees were ancient; it was obvious to Jean Orliac that this location
had been cultivated in ages past, producing the classic Mediterranean trio - olives, wine and wheat, and that this would be an ideal site to
produce a "Grand Vin," the dream of this passionate man. Starting with 5 hectares and acquiring another 50 soon after, Jean Orliac named his
property "l'Hortus", the Latin translation for "The Garden", as an homage to the land and its tradition. Early on, his grapes were transported to
the local Cave Cooperative for pressing; in 1990 his cellars were built which allowed him to vinify and bottle on his own property.
