"This new offering is beautifully knit together, framing the ripe raspberry fruit with barrel spices, herbs and a streak of coffee grounds. Immediately appealing, it nonetheless has the weight and structure to be cellared until 2020-2022." |
91 Pts Stephen Tanzer - Vinous Media |
"Bright ruby-red. Lively aromas of cassis, licorice and black pepper. Densely packed and sweet, showing a distinctly creamy, pliant texture for a wine from this cool season but the black fruit and licorice flavors are kept firm by a touch of minerality. For all its sweetness this wine has no shortage of structure, and its ripe tannins and excellent length suggest it will give pleasure over the next eight to ten years. An excellent showing today." |
Description:
"Andrew Januik, son of Mike, has produced his own wine under a new label â Andrew Januik, Stone Cairn. This is the initial release. It is a super small production wine, only 199 cases produced in total. The wine is a great example of the capabilities of Washington Cabernet Sauvignon. It is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon with 4% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc from the Obelisco and Shaw Vineyards in the Red Mountain AVA. Andrew said he chose those two vineyards because he is partial to Red Mountain Grapes and because they best represent his personal relationship between wine and nature as well as the Red Mountain terroir. 2011 was a cooler year than what Washington is accustomed to, so he was able to let the fruit mature and ripen on the vine for a longer period of time, achieving structural development without the risk of overripeness. This wine was aged for 21 months in 50% new French oak, 36% one-use French oak, and 14% new American oak." - Importer
Winery:
"Januik Winery evolved from an intense desire to create wines that are among the best anywhere. Doing this requires two things. One is having access to the best grapes available, and the other is doing things on a very small scale. Utilizing his relationships with growers throughout the Columbia Valley, Mike Januik, former winemaker at Chateau St. Michele, acquires the best grapes Columbia Valley has to offer and his small production winery achieves wines of great finesse and balance.
