Description:

Notes on the Molino Y Lagares Lavia Plus
Molino y Lagares is a small winery located in the area called Venta del Pino with a beautiful landscape and a long tradition in vine growing. The Molino y Lagares Project was conceived in 2003 when a group a wine lovers joined to create a winery with the main aim of producing quality wines from their own vineyards grown beside the winery in an organic way. Molino y Lagares is centered in the indigenous grape variety of the Bullas area, the Monastrell. There is also little of the Syrah variety, used with the Monastrell for one of the wine lines. Soils are composed of clay, slime, gravel and pebbles. In spite of their organic poorness, they are deep and permeable. Climate is Mediterranean with continental influences as the mountains surround the vineyards. Altitude is over 800 meters above sea level, winters are cold, rainfall is scarce and summers are hot but with cool nights. All this favors the natural rhythm of development and ripening of the grapes.

Rating: 90 Points
The 2005 Lavia+ is 100% Monastrell sourced from 70- to 80-year-old ungrafted vines. It spent 13 months in 300-liter barrels followed by 3 months in foudre prior to bottling without fining or filtration. Purple-colored, it exhibits a cedar, earthy, leather, and blueberry-scented bouquet with a layering of spicy fruit, soft tannin, good balance and enough structure to improve for another 2-3 years in the bottle. Drink this lengthy effort through 2025. - Wine Advocate

Notes on the San Roman Toro
"Bodegas y Vinedos Maurodos owns 55 hectares in the villages of Villaester and San Roman de Hornija, planted mainly with Tinta de Toro, which come from the same family as Tempranillo, but adapted to Toro over centuries. This adaptation has lead to smaller berries which in turn lead to deeper color and more intense aroma and structure than typical of Tempranillo from other regions. It is possible to separate two different soil areas, in Villaester the soil has sand and clay with some gravels, while in San Roman the soil is more stony." "Grapes mature sooner in San Roman than Villaester. The vines range in age up to 70 years old and are pruned to grow as bushes rather than on vertical trellises. On the vines the grapes hang low under a rounded canopy of leaves that protects them from scorching summer temperatures. This type of pruning concentrates the flavor of the grapes as it naturally limits the yield of grapes for each vine." -Winery

"This is, without question, San Roman's finest hour, producing a full bodied yet well delineated powerhouse of a wine, showing broad shouldered black fruit, oak, and mineral-driven flavors. Quintesential Toro from an epic vintage." --Stephen C. Fahy, DWS, Wine Buyer

Rating: 94 Points
"This burly Tempranillo opens with an alluring blend of graphite, stony mineral, marzipan and ripe black-fruit aromas. The palate is lusty, giant and tannic, but not mean or fierce. Blackberry, cassis and chocolate flavors end with cafe mocha and licorice notes, while tannic grab suggests aging this until 2015-16 and drinking through 2023.- Wine Enthusiast
