"The 2011 Gigondas is a fantastic effort in the vintage. Aged 30% in demi-muids, it offers gorgeous purity, with notions of blackberry, mineral, wild herbs and flowers in a medium to full-bodied, elegant and surprisingly fresh and lively package. It-s hard to resist now, yet given the overall balance here, I can-t imagine it not evolving gracefully for at least another 5-7 years. Run by Philippe Cartoux, Domaine des Espiers covers roughly 27 acres, 10 of which are in Gigondas, with the balance in Sablet and Cotes du Rhone. These were some of the top Gigondas I was able to taste for this report. While the straight Gigondas is very traditional in style (even though it has a small part aged in demi-muids), the Cuvee Les Blaches is aged all in demi-muids and shows a much more modern profile. Both are superb and worth seeking out." |
