Notes on the 2012 Clos Des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape (97 WS #7 WOTY, 96 WA)
Clos des Papes does it again! It seems like every year this wine lands in the Wine Spectator Top 10, and the 2012 vintage is yet another remarkable vintage for this red hot estate. Since the 2003 vintage, Clos des Papes has regularly contended for wine of the vintage, and has been one of the few Chateauneuf houses to stay the course and make one, singular brilliant CDP, as opposed to making a variety of different wines.
Wine Spectator is not the only publication in love with this brilliant house either. Only once since 2003 has it rated below 95 points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, and that was in the immensely challenging 2008 vintage. Owner/winemaker Paul Avril has really dedicated himself to constantly putting out a high quality product regardless of what the vintage throws his way.
Reviews on the 2012 Clos Des Papes Chateauneuf du Pape
97 Points - Wine Spectator and #7 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2014 - "A stunner, with a gorgeous cassis aroma that soars from the glass, reinforced by a core of cassis, cherry and plum pâte de fruit, hoisin sauce, warm ganache and well-roasted apple wood notes. Hefty, but suave and seamless. The finish lets graphite and licorice elements glide through. The structure is dense, polished and perfectly integrated, resulting in lovely length. Should be a beauty after cellaring. Best from 2017 through 2032."
96 Points - Jeb Dunnuck - Robert Parker's the Wine Advocate - "Moving to the 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape, this is a vintage thatâs loved by Paul-Vincent, and one that he compares to 2005. Hitting 15.4% alcohol, it has gorgeous richness and depth, with the hallmark elegance of the estate. Kirsch, blackberry, licorice, spice and floral notes all emerge from the glass, and it builds on the palate with superb concentration, integrated acidity and sweet tannin. Paul-Vincent commented that he thinks this will close down quickly. Nevertheless its balance, tannin and overall equilibrium will keep it drinking nicely through 2032."
Notes on the 2009 Mesa Malombra Isola Dei Nuraghi
This Sardinian Red is from one of the regionâs most influential producers of terroir-driven red wines: Mesa Malombra! Mesa Malombraâs 2009 cuvee is a one-of-a-kind blend of Syrah and old vine Carignan from the wineryâs estate holdings.
Wines from Sardinia are known for their richly-textured yet suave Chateauneuf-du-Pape-like garrigue that are both charming and bold at the same time, and todayâs offer perfectly fits the bill! As Ian Dagata remarked âFresh, clean and captivating, with lovely ripe acidity giving shape and lift to the blackberry, smoky plumâ flavors.
Reviews on the 2009 Mesa Malombra Isola Dei Nuraghi
90 Points - Wine Spectator - "Spice, herb and underbrush notes mix with subtle black cherry and blackberry fruit in this elegant red, with juicy acidity. Well-knit, with a lasting, chewy finish. Syrah. Drink now through 2019. 6,000 cases made. -AN" (11/14)
91 Points - Wine Enthusiast - "Fine craftsmanship is evident in this Sardinian blend of Carignano and Syrah. The wine is rich and extracted, with bold fruit notes of blackberry and plum followed by spice and tobacco. Some toasted oak influences appear in the mouth alongside soft, smooth tannins. -ML" (02/13)
91 Points - Ian Dagata - Vinous Media - "Good ruby-red. Dark cherry and smoky plum aromas are complicated by sexy chocolate and herbal earth tones. Fresh, clean and captivating, with lovely ripe acidity giving shape and lift to the blackberry, smoky plum and grilled bacon flavors. Impressively rich and complex for an Italian syrah, with the stuffing to support its substantial but smooth tannins." (03/14)
90 Points - Monica Larner - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate - "A blend of 60% Carignano and 40% Syrah, the 2009 Isola dei Nuraghi Malombra shows a very large frame (with a huge oak imprinting) and massive density that sits heavy and determined on the palate. The impenetrable appearance of the wine is reinforced by thick lines of Morello cherry, dried blackberry, leather, Indian spice and moist chewing tobacco. The wine walks with a heavy footprint and should be paired next to a cut of succulent red meat. "
