"Medium-deep ruby color; tight, dark cherry aormas with earthy, toasty notes; rich, ripe, dark cherry with earth and spice notes; some oak and tannin; good structure and balance; long finish. Toasty, earthy Pinot with nice length. Needs time in the glass to open up." |
Description:
We love making new discoveries, and this one has us really excited! The fabulous Carneros Pinot from Ziata, the new project of Napa veteran Karen Cakebread, is an incredible find for us. After 18 years of working at Cakebread, she decided it was time to start her own venture, and this small production winery started off with a bang!
Karen crossed paths with her winemaker, Jennifer Williams, when she worked at Cakebread Cellars after working vineyards with Napa legend David Abreu. Jennifer also got to work with Francois Peschon at Araujo, and before she took the position with Karen, she was the chief winemaker at Spottswoode from 2006 to 2010. All of her hard work paid off, getting named a "Winemaker to Watch" by the San Francisco Gate's Jon Bonne in 2007. Jennifer is clearly a Napa star in the making!!
"This vineyard is located in the upper Carneros region at the southern end of Napa Valley. The site is very rocky with well-drained soils, and the vines are planted on a southern-facing slope - ideal conditions for Pinot Noir. Itâs a relatively young vineyard, planted in May 2003 during the full moon. The French clone selection is a nice blend of 115 and 777, which results in great color extraction, smooth tannins and pretty aromatics, and a wine that will age gracefully." - Winery
