100 Pts Robert Parker - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"Alvear's 2011 Pedro Ximenez de Anada is the most amazing Pedro Ximenez I have ever tasted. It may also be one of the first to be vintage-dated. The grapes were hand-harvested in September, then allowed to dry in the sunshine until they began fermentation, which is ultimately arrested by the addition of spirits. The wine spent six months in large American oak prior to being bottled. It is an amazing effort that looks like molasses. Notes of macerated figs, chocolate and caramelized tropical fruits emerge from this full-bodied, unctuously-textured wine. While sweet, it has enough acidity to balance out its richness. This astonishing 2011 Pedro Ximenez will last as long as any reader of this newsletter."

Description:

"100% Pedro Ximenez. The name tells you all about this wine's origin: this sweet young wine is obtained through drying the Pedro Ximenez grapes on mats in the sun. The best way of bringing Andalusian summer sun to your table.

Amber colour and delicate hues of ripe fruit. Clean, light and superbly stylish, it is a pure raisin wine that combines a full aroma with a pleasant fruitiness. Appealing nectar with a pleasant vinosity. Silky smooth in texture.

Alvear is one of the most prestigious and internationally renowned bodegas in Andalucia, boasting extensive vineyards that are located in the most famous estates in the Sierra de Montilla y Moriles (Cordoba).

This privileged land's star grape variety is Pedro Ximenez, which is thought to have originated in the Rhine region, and is used by the bodega as the unique base wine for its sweet, Fino, Oloroso and Amontillado wines.

The Pedro Ximenez grape variety is not only the star of DO Montilla-Moriles but also of the wines and vineyards owned by Bodegas Alvear. Legend has it that it was brought from the Rhine by a solider serving in the Spanish army in Flanders, who consequently gave it his name.

Pedro Ximenez is a sweet, smooth wine made by exposing the grapes to the sun once harvested. Grape clusters are spread over plaited esparto grass mats and the grapes are slowly sun-dried until becoming raisins. A dense must is then obtained from the crushed raisins to produce an authentic 'raisin juice'. The subsequent winemaking and ageing processes give rise to the region's classic sweet Pedro Ximenez wines." - Winery
