Then richer and deeper on the palate, with flinty blackcurrant, raspberry and herbal flavors carrying nicely through the aftertaste. The chewy, peppery tannins have smoothed out nicely with age. Rich, with medium to full body, high tannin, and subtle oak in the background, the 1995 is nearly as structured and tannic as the 1996. The two vintages are more similar than dissimilar. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2020." "Gruaud-Larose was purchased in 1997 by Jacques Merlaut, the well-known proprietor of many other chateaux, including Chasse-Spleen. Merlaut was not responsible for making the 1996 or 1995, but is responsible for their elevage and bottling." (02/98)

"Dark crimson with a little age at the rim. Powerfully scented and spicy â a wine that craves attention. Sweet start, sweet throughout so that it is not one of the subtlest but it should deliver lots of pleasure. Just a little chewy on the end even though the fruit has evolved quite a bit. Very Gruaud. "Cabernet Sauvignon 57%, Merlot 31%, Cabernet Franc 7,5%, Petit Verdot 3%, Malbec 1,5%. Deep, intense, ruby red colour. The nose is concentrated and reveals fresh fruit of raspberries and red currants. Overtones of smoke and tobacco. Smooth yet precise attack. Notes of juicy fruits mingle with spices such as cinnamon. A touch of minerals on the finish. Great length with a certain acidity that extends it. Peak: 10 years." -Winery

VINTAGE:
"June and July were had noticeable high temperatures and no precipitation. Thanks to the good climatic conditions of the summer, the grapes reached a chemical make-up that could be qualified as excellent at the time of the harvest. September was marked by cool and rainy weather. These precipitations were cause for concern before the harvest but, mostly, they were useful to compensate for the excessive dryness; the consequences hereof could have been detrimental." -Winery
