Today I received a case of wine from a store in New York. It was packaged in a flimsy recyclable cardboard tray. The surrounding box was single wall corrugated material. How all 12 bottles showed up to my door in a UPS truck without being broken is beyond me. Anyhow it was defiantly cheap packaging but it worked. The plus is all of it is recyclable and it will all make it to the trash.

The earth covers roughly 37 Billion acres, and weighs approximately 120,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 or 120 Septillion Pounds. I am not so arrogant as to think that my consumption of a few ounces of styrofoam (which promptly goes into the trash and then to a landfill in one of those 37 billion acres) would have any real impact. Thus, I will gladly accept my wine however Wine Library chooses to ship it...just keep the deals coming.

to JustinM: just a joke, my friend, just a joke. How in the heck do you reuse those things? Are you in the wine shipping business? Maybe they could be pool floats or something. I'm all in favor of reducing unnecessary waste where possible, but I do not subscribe to the Church of Green if it is going to cost significantly more.

BTW, I used to work for a winery (remain nameless) and we shipped wine using all corrugated cardboard like this: http://www.naylorpackaging.com/packaging_specialty.asp

I am not aware of any breakages, but I don't think it is secure as the styro that WL uses. I personally don't want my $1,000/case wine dripping out the back of the UPS truck.

I've received a number of bottles through other online retailers using entirely fitted/folded cardboard shipping products without any breaks. As I understand it, the shipping material cost is less and obviously entirely recyclable or compostable, but there is a time expense in assembling the shipping inserts.

Assuming that eco-friendliness introduces a cost, I prefer remaining eco-unfriendly. And if cinderella wine seeks to retain their position as cost leader, and thus my business, they should avoid such costs. If there are no superfluous costs, save the environment!
